Tignes cares about its forest
Over the centuries the French administration has structured an organization to take care of its forest heritage. The name “Eaux et forêts” appeared in the 13th century, it is an indicator recognized by all making it possible to orchestrate the management of the forest and its ecosystem.
In the year 1860, a first law called «mountain law» stressed the importance of taking care of the forest, protecting it and its environment.
The Tignes Forest territory has evolved according to the needs of human activity, it would seem that its history goes back a very long way. Evidence of just how far back in history can be illustrated with a now famous tree trunk that was discovered after the Grande Motte glacier gave it up. The carbon dated trunk was shown to have lived between 2092 to 1730 BC.
Field work
The Tignes Communal Forest managed since 1964 by the “Office National des Eaux et Forêts” (ONF), it is classified in the «Program of Recognition of Forest Certifications» (PEFC).
The major actions are the protection of dangerous areas through specific development (vegetation and afforestation) and forest improvement for tourism purposes.
The ONF works hand in hand with the services of green spaces and paths of the Municipality of Tignes on the planting, production, and maintenance of trees.
The tree, a formidable recycling machine
We need forests, because a tree not only sucks up carbon and releases oxygen, but it participates in soil retention, it allows water filtration, and it contributes greatly to the well-being of animal populations and plants.
Contributing to the strengthening of biodiversity and the development of local populations is one of the prerogatives of the Reforest’action programme. In Europe, several projects focus on the restoration of dying forests or those affected by natural hazards. In 2018, thanks to Reforest’action, Tignes benefited from the planting of 140 trees, representing 280 shelters for animals and 560 months of oxygen generated!
The richness of the mountain flora, the beauty of its forests and its fauna are all reasons to take the time and make your next stay in Tignes.
Winter gives a magical dimension to nature and especially to trees, come and be amazed!
