French Alps and ski-lifts

Stay With us Resorts · November 2022

French Alps, synonymous of good infrastructure

In France, the ski-lift fleet modernization is permanent and always ongoing, this year 17 new lifts are will be opened in the Alps to upate older retired models.

Tignes is on the move, as are Chamonix, la Norma, la Toussuire, Alpe d’Huez, Morillon, Châtel, Saint Gervais and Vars.

In Tignes, major works, and a complete overhaul has been carried out to the Aiguille Rouge chairlift , installed back in 1988, now replaced with a new 6-seater chairlift. This follows on from works already completed to the Brévières chairlift in 2018 and the Replat telecord in 2021.

Safety first

Safety is a point on which all manufacturers of ski-lifts are very exacting, both at the level of the overall system and of the each parts of its composition.

During construction, the safety analysis procedures are draconian, diagrams of combinations of potential events (fault trees) make it possible to consider the undesirable scenarios and to counter them. European standards provide the safety coefficients to be applied for cross calculations for each part of the system; then many very demanding endurance tests are carried out.

On-site installation is carried out according to high demand procedures, the ski-lifts in service are then checked according to precise programs, on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.

The role of users also enters the equation; indeed, irresponsible behaviour can have significant consequences on the operation of a ski-lift.
